Reid Manheim is the founder of Six Mercer, Inc., an international design firm and research brand based in New York City. Six Mercer is dedicated to preserving artisanal techniques and building ethical supply chains, inspired by the principles of Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) under the Nagoya Protocol. To that end, the firm incorporates the work of artisan ateliers from Asia and around the world into all of its projects.

Reid previously lived and worked in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo, where he established relationships with numerous Asia-based craftspeople, furniture designers, galleries, and artists, relationships that remain at the heart of Six Mercer's work.

He is also the founder of Solvitur, Inc., which works to ensure that countries and indigenous peoples and local communities share fairly in the benefits when their biodiversity and traditional knowledge are used in new products. That work led to Six Mercer: having seen first-hand how ABS agreements can return benefits directly to the communities that hold traditional knowledge, he recognized that the same principles could apply to the world of design.

Earlier in his career, Reid worked at Albright Stonebridge Group and in investment across New York, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. He is a published author for his work with Stanford’s Rural Education Action Program, whose mission is to help underserved populations reach their full potential.

He graduated summa cum laude from Middlebury College, where he studied International Politics and Economics and the History of Art, and speaks Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
